In every sporting contest involving the Midshipmen of Annapolis and the Black Knights of West Point, interest builds throughout the country because it is such a long-running rivalry.
The stakes are sky high every year when they play the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia with the president attending frequently. However, both schools also place great importance when they play against each other in basketball.
Scheduled for a hoops matchup on January 22, 2022 in Annapolis, Navy hosts Army in an important Patriot League game for the 2021-22 season. The game’s outcome might either get them in or keep them out of March Madness.
Navy was blasted 77-57 by Virginia Tech in its season debut at the Veteran’s Classic, which is played annually in the Naval Academy’s Alumni Hall. The awful performance was shocking considering Navy had a terrific season last year, finishing with a 15–3 overall record and an almost spotless 12–1 record in the Patriot League.
Leading the Middies for a 10th season, Navy Coach Ed DeChellis should improve the team before Army invades Annapolis. He has plenty of juniors and seniors who made last season such a huge success. The Midshipmen play another key Patriot League game on January 29, 2022 against American University in Annapolis.
In general, the U.S. Military Academy have not shined since founding their basketball team in 1903. The Black Knights are one of just four original Division I teams to have not participated in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Hall of Famer Bob Knight turned down their one invitation to play in 1968, because he thought Army had a great chance of winning the NIT.
Currently helmed by Jimmy Allen, he has an overall record of 66-80 in 5 seasons. As a child, Allen lived in West Point, New York. His dad was a 1967 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and was an Army officer for 20 years. Allen secured his first ever winning season at West Point last year when his team finished 12-10.
