The Annapolis Opera is proud to present Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods at the Main Theatre in the Maryland Hall of Creative Arts. Three performances are scheduled during March 2022 in beautiful and historic Annapolis.
Synopsis
Yearning for their first child, a baker and his wife wish to go on a fantastic journey so they can reverse the curse that keeps them childless. On their journey, they encounter Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, and two princes. All are pursuing their own individual wish in this magical tale of adventure and love. They will learn that a “happily ever after” requires a personal price that must be paid.
Overview
Into the Woods is based on The Uses of Enchantment by Bruno Bettelheim. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim with the book by James Lapine.
Intertwining plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, Sondheim’s musical explores the consequences of the fond wishes and quests of characters from several Brothers Grimm fairy tales.
After debuting in 1986 at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, Into the Woods made its Broadway premiere on November 5, 1987. The musical subsequently won several Tony Awards, including Best Book, Best Score, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason).
Directed by Rob Marshall, the Disney feature film adaptation was released in 2014. Grossing $213 million globally, “Into the Woods” garnered three Academy Award nominations.
