Debuting in 2013, the Annapolis Film Festival (AFF) soon became highly regarded due to its outstanding slate of mainstream and independent feature films, shorts and documentaries every year.
Just as they do at the Cannes Film Festival, film fans rush from movie to movie in downtown Annapolis. Many fans hop on the City Circulator trolley for a free ride to arrive just in time for the next screening. Take your closeup at the AFF from March 31 to April 3, 2022 in beautiful and historic Annapolis.
Ensuring that the diversity of today’s United States is captured by its lineup, AFF includes compelling work portraying independent thought and multicultural perspectives. The festival is also international, bringing in motion pictures from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Youth is also served by a Student Showcase featuring 12 short films by emerging filmmakers.
2021 Flashback
2021’s AFF Opening Night Film was “Marvelous and the Black Hole”, directed by Kate Tsang. The movie is an inspiring drama about a rebellious teenage girl (Miya Cech) coping with the death of her mother. An eccentric magician played by Rhea Perlman, the Emmy-winner actress from “Cheers”, helps her heal.
The Jewish Experience Showcase screened “Thou Shalt Not Hate”, a moving film about a Jewish doctor who is living a carefree existence in Trieste, Italy until he attends to a car accident victim. After his patient dies, he becomes involved with the surviving family members who are neo-Nazis. Mauro Mancini of Italy directed this story pointing out how our choices define us.
“The Perfect Candidate” revolved around the story of a youthful Saudi doctor working to improve the conditions of the hospital where she works. After she decides to run for office in local city elections, her conservative community must adjust to accepting their female candidate. This movie was directed by Saudi Arabia’s first female director, Haifaa Al-Mansour.
